In Caregivers We Trust: Sharing Stories, Inspiring Hope
Built For Caregivers, By Caregivers

Why Trust Me?
(A family caregiver who's been in your shoes)
My Caregiving Journey
Hi, I’m Nick, founder of Caregivers Café.
My journey into caregiving started in 2012, when my father suffered a massive stroke that left him in a locked-in state. He was fully paralyzed and unable to communicate beyond blinking.
For the next 10 years, I was his primary caregiver. I wasn't a nurse or a doctor. I was a son trying to figure it out as I went. Dealing with hospitals, home care, insurance, daily care, and the emotional rollercoaster that never really stopped.
Caring for him wasn’t just about physical assistance. It was about planning, preparing, and executing a strategy to ensure he had the highest quality of life possible. I had to learn everything from scratch, often feeling lost and unsupported. But through trial, error, and determination, I developed deep experience in caregiving, advocacy, and long-term care planning.
I know firsthand how frustrating, exhausting, and isolating caregiving can be. But I also know how to make it manageable.
What I Learned Through Experience
Caring for my dad wasn’t just about keeping him alive. It was about protecting his dignity, comfort, and quality of life in a brutal situation.
Over those 10+ years, I built real-world experience in areas like:

-
Medical & Healthcare Navigation
I became my dad’s advocate, coordinating with doctors, therapists, and home health providers. I learned how to:
-
Make sense of complex treatment plans
-
Prepare better questions for appointments
-
Push for clarity when something didn’t feel right
-
Keep everyone on the same page
I’m not a doctor, but I know what it’s like to be the family member trying to make sense of a system that doesn’t slow down to explain things.

-
Financial & Insurance Planning
No one expects to be thrown into the world of Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and out-of-pocket expenses, until it happens.
I dealt with:
-
Government benefits and eligibility
-
Insurance approvals and denials
-
Prioritizing what we could realistically afford
I’m not a financial advisor or attorney, but I understand how confusing this can be. I help families get organized, see their situation more clearly, and identify what to bring to the right professionals.

-
Daily Care, Comfort & Well-being
Day to day, I handled:
-
Medication schedules
-
Specialized meals and PEG tube feeding
-
Skin care and comfort routines
-
Hygiene and mobility with a fully paralyzed person
Every day was about ensuring his well-being while adapting to the evolving challenges of his condition.

-
Emotional & Mental Resilience
Caregiving isn’t just physical—it’s emotional and mental.
I had to:
-
Manage my own burnout and resentment
-
Find small ways to keep my dad’s spirit alive
-
Cope with grief while still showing up every day
-
Hold boundaries with family, professionals, and myself
I’m not a therapist, but I deeply understand the emotional load caregivers carry and how important it is to feel seen, not judged.

-
Long-Term Care & End-of-Life Planning
I had to think ahead:
-
Organizing paperwork and information
-
Building consistent care routines
-
Preparing for emergencies
-
Facing end-of-life realities
I worked with medical and legal professionals where needed, but as the son and primary caregiver, I was the one making sure nothing fell through the cracks. Now I help other families think through these stages with more structure and less panic.

-
Caregiver Hiring, Managing & Training
Over the years, I:
-
Hired, trained, and managed caregivers from agencies and privately
-
Learned how to spot good fits (and bad ones)
-
Set expectations and routines that actually got followed
-
Protected consistency and quality of care for my dad
A big part of what I do now is helping families think clearly about who they bring into the home and how to set them up to succeed.
I took on these challenges without formal training, which means I can break down complex caregiving processes into real, practical, easy-to-follow steps for families going through the same struggles.

Who I Help
I work with family caregivers who are:
-
Adult children suddenly caring for a parent after a stroke, fall, serious diagnosis, or decline
-
Spouses trying to care for a partner while still juggling work, kids, and everything else
-
Siblings thrown into caregiving after a spinal cord injury or other traumatic event
-
Families who feel like they’re constantly reacting and never ahead of anything
If you feel like you’re drowning in decisions, appointments, paperwork, and emotions, you’re the person I built Caregivers Café for.
